Penistone Archive

About the Penistone History Archive

The History Group was asked to take ownership and develop the archive. Penistone Town Council provided a room which is dedicated to the late Neville Roebuck, creator of the original archive and the Penistone Archive was reborn and opened to the public in July 2013.

It has taken a lot of hard work and hundreds of volunteer hours to  get to where we are and we are proud of our results.

One of our major tasks is to keep up to date with modern news and information via news clippings and photographs etc., laying a foundation for the next few hundred years.

The aim of the archive is to promote awareness of history, culture and heritage within the local area. We have over eight hundred books, war memorabilia and many thousands of photographs, maps and documents of Penistone and the surrounding areas.

Financially we are self-funded by writing a twice-yearly journal and other booklets, visitor donations and we also apply for grants where available.

So feel free to come in and browse and chat to our knowledgable volunteers – you’re always assured a warm welcome.

What you can See

We have over eight hundred books, war memorabilia, Penistone Almanacks and many thousands of photographs, maps and documents of Penistone and the surrounding areas.

Many of these have been digitised and can also be viewed on our computers along with slideshows and other digitial media. for a nominal fee copies of these can also be provided.

Adding to the Archive

We are grateful for the donations received and hope that you may add your own to enrich Penistone and District’s history. We are always looking for local documents, almanacks, maps, family histories, photographs, slides, negatives, cine film and video of local events – new or old.

About this Website

This site is a taster of what we have in the archive itself and will hopefully whet your appetite. We’re not attempting to provide a comprehensive history of Penistone and the nearby towns and villages. If you’re carrying out research then the chances are that you won’t find what you want here – but it’s highly likely that we’ll have it on our shelves in the archive room.

If you have any comments or suggestions about what we could include in further updates then please contact us.

Would you like to Volunteer?

We are always looking for extra help. Please contact us by email or come and see us.

The Penistone History Group

Since 1986, The Penistone History Group have been holding regular talks. They are interesting, informative and most all, enjoyable, covering old, local and modern history plus some by sessions by collectors and enthusiasts, many with local connections. Most are supported by a video screen presentation.
